The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center is a nature center dedicated to environmental education and outreach. They are located on the eastern end of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon estuary and wetland area in Carlsbad. The 3800 square foot building was completed in October 2004 and began hosting public programs and outreach activities in 2005. Owned and operated by the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, the Discovery Center houses exhibits and displays which pertain to historical and environmental aspects of the Lagoon. In addition, the Discovery Center hosts numerous festivals, lectures, seminars and programs throughout the year.
Carlsbad is filled with fabulous things for families to explore. There are so many options, its hard to choose what activity to do! My littlest & I visited the Agua Hedionda Lagoon & we loved it! The center is quaint with a variety of animals to look at. There was a volunteer on site who was incredibly friendly & knowledgeable. They have animals that you can "touch" and some lovely snakes that we would rather "just look at"!
This 400-acre lagoon is home to a wide array of flora and fauna. Inside the Discovery center they have several exhibits for families to explore. Here is a brief description of what is on exhibit now.
My son (4 years old) loved the History Hall. There are fossils to brush off, unique native american instruments in addition to coloring. The room abuts an open doorway overlooking the lagoon. The view is serene, the breeze at your back and the perfect backdrop for lovely quality time with my little guy. The Discovery Center is free but has a suggested donation of $5. We ended our visit with a delicious muffin from the onsite coffee stop. It was a fantastic morning & I look froward to returning! I highly recommend visiting.
