Carlsbad’s Strawberry Fields

By Mandy Chuey May 20, 2017

Fresh fruit and a farm feel without the work. Carlsbad is the town of plenty. Not only do we have flower fields, Legoland and gorgeous beaches- we have juicy strawberries ripe for the picking. All you have to do is show up at “U Pick Strawberries” owned and operated by Jimmy Ukegawa and his family, 3rd generation farmers and Carlsbad locals. His family has been growing in Carlsbad since the early 1950’s. He’s a UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in Plant and Soil Biology. So you know you're dealing with an expert. Purchase your desired container size at the U Pick stand, take the path and play farmer picking fruits grown by the Carlsbad Strawberry Company.  I visited U Pick Strawberries with my son’s preschool class and we had a blast!  Picking strawberries from U Pick was fun AND delicious.  Let’s just say our fresh strawberry container was empty within a few hours after making it home.  My 3 year old son had so much fun he has asked to go back. Which we will mostly do before strawberry season ends as Jimmy Ukegawa says “depends on Mother Nature.” Some friends have made jam with their delicious bounty.  I’m thinking fresh strawberry margaritas with our next haul sounds good. Carlsbad Strawberry Company is a North County institution with a rich “sweet” history. U Pick Strawberries is a must do with your families. Can’t make it out this strawberry season? In the Fall you can visit U Pick and for their pumpkins and corn maze.
