Carlsbad Girl Scouts' Mystery Encampment

By Mandy S Chuey June 2, 2017

The Girl Scout organization is over 100 years old with 2.7 million girls and adult volunteers who believe girls can change the world. Scouts are dedicated to making the world a better place while having fun along the way. The organization's new campaign focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and explain their mission with the acronym G.I.R.L (Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk Taker and Leader.)

Carlsbad has many of these special go-getters and innovators. These brave and  rambunctious scouts do much more than stand outside our local Vons selling must have Thin Mints. Girl Scouts learn about money management, build leadership skills, make friends all while improving their community of Carlsbad. On the weekend of May 19-21st Carlsbad Girl Scouts took over Whispering Oaks Camp in Julian, California. Some camped out in tents, some stayed in cabins and little ones drove up for the day.

Camp Whispering Oaks offers all the comforts of modern living in the beautiful outdoors. Well lit paths, through manzanita, oak and pine trees, lead campers from living spaces to outdoor activities There is a sports field, playground, archery area and rope courses.

Co- Encampment Directors Kimberly Hess and Lisa Robotti planned, coordinated and executed this year’s Carlsbad Encampment. They are both moms and Girl Scout Leaders of their daughter’s troops. This was not a small task considering it involved almost 200 scouts and volunteers. The scout organizers are referred to as the “Camper Council.”  They chose the food, crafts and the overall theme.  The Camper Council chose “Mystery” as the theme which they infused throughout the weekend.  Campers were given Secret Agent badges and Secret Code names! How cool! Throughout Mystery camp there were a number of puzzles, scavenger hunts and an elaborate S’more reward. The scouts were challenged throughout the weekend analytically and physically.  In addition, the scouts built magical fairy houses in a picturesque shady woodsy area.

Every troop that attended pitched in. They led activities, built campfires and lead songs. The Carlsbad Girl Scouts that attended earned a scout designed Mystery patch and lifelong memories.

Carlsbad Girl Scout Encampment, like most of the organization’s activities, inspired creativity, leadership and sisterhood.
