Museum of Making Music

By Mandy S. Chuey June 16, 2017

The Museum of Making Music is a hidden gem. The MOMM is just a stone’s throw away from other Carlsbad favorite's like Legoland and the Flower Fields. The Museum is located on the first floor of the building which also serves as NAMM’s international headquarters. NAMM stands for the National Association of Music Merchants, the not-for-profit association that serves and strengthens the global music products industry. They have unique exhibitions, live music performances, and innovative educational programs. Visiting the MOMM you will hear beautiful song recordings, see and play a variety of instruments, new and old. As a museum visitor guests are enchanted by dynamic storytelling using all the senses.

My family attended the “From MOMM to Moose Pass” show with Alaska's Fiddling Poet Ken Waldman, and his accompanist, Cal State San Marcos Music Professor, Bill Bradbury. The show entertained all ages in a very intimate setting. Parents took their little ones and sat right in front of the stage. Mr. Waldman’s show consists of traditional Appalachian-style string-band music, poetry and storytelling.

The tickets to the show were a steal! Only $3 dollars for children over 4 years old and $5 for adults. Every concert ticket holder was also given free entrance to the MOMM. A great deal for a family!

Mr. Waldman incorporated the kids onto the show by bringing them up on stage to sing songs and to collaborate on a poem. My daughter watched in delight as the two musicians played banjos, violins and mandolins. Mr. Waldman and Professor Bradbury’s humor and music held the kids attention. The adults had fun as their children and grandchildren sang silly songs involving both “slurping sounds” and “a greasy goat”. Our first concert at the MOMM was a success. Visit the MOMM to learn about musical history in the United States, play instruments and listen to the history of music.
